Frequently Asked
Questions
What kinds of music does Red House Studio typically work on?
We typically work on indie singer/songwriter, folk, rock, alt country, and alt CCM music. We typically focus on genres that utilize real instruments (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, real acoustic drums, keys). While we have done projects in the pop, hip hop, and electronic genres, we don't specialize in those genres - typically those genres lean more heavily on sampled sounds and less on live recording. If you want a detailed breakdown of the different kinds of studios that are out there, and what kind of studio Red House is, check out this blog post.
Is Red House Studio equipped to mix and master?
A lot of the time, we work on songs from start to finish (recording, mixing, mastering). This isn't traditionally how studios/engineers work, but more producers and engineers are starting to work this way, and we feel that we owe it to our clients to be able to guide them to a finished (mastered) song if that's what they need.
We do also frequently work on projects where we are only needed for one part of the process (recording, mixing, or mastering). We don't do vinyl mastering, just digital mastering.
What if I need help finding musicians for my project?
We are thankful to know lots of amazing local musicians in and around the Athens, Georgia area and beyond. We work with lots of singer songwriters that want to add drums, bass, guitar, strings, pedal steel, organ, rhodes, and more to their songs and are happy to recommend musicians for those roles.
We also have relationships with remote musicians around the world that we can easily pull into projects if needed.
Where are you located?
We are located on the north side of Athens, Georgia (about 20 minutes from downtown Athens). We don't publicly list our address because this is a home studio, but reach out to me through the Get Started page and I'll be happy to spill the beans on all my personal information :).
What's Red House Studio's gear list?
Check out our Gear List page for a full rundown.
Who have y'all worked with?
We've had the pleasure of working with a long list of musicians locally and remotely (over 500 songs to date). You can check out projects we worked on here, but here's some of the people we've worked with either to record, mix, or master: Wim Tapley, Ricky Chilton, Kevin Chung, The Tuten Brothers, Lane Marie, Joseph Bones, Sweet Tea Pedigree, Abigail Mae, Daniel Hardin, Katie Lawson, Wood Cathedrals, Sophia Barkhouse, UGA Soul Music Ensemble, Andrew Brantley, Taylor Griffith, Bradley Mckee, and many more.
Is Red House Studio a good place for live band tracking?
We are mainly a one-room operation, but we've done live band tracking before. Feel free to check out our Credits page to see some videos of that (Joseph Bones was live tracked audio and video). Usually, if you are looking for a tight, modern sound, that is best achieved with tracking instruments separately, but if you are trying to capture a live take on video, or capture an authentic performance of a more traditional genre (jazz, blues, classic rock, alt country) then we can definitely accommodate a live band recording.
How much does Red House Studio cost?
The total cost of a project depends on a variety of factors. If you want a detailed breakdown of the cost of every service we offer, you can check out this blog post where I (Luke) dive into every aspect of pricing from all the factors that affect cost, to potential discounts, to refund policy, to how we accept payments.
Does Red House Studio use Generative AI to help with music production?
With the rise of Generative AI in music production and the threat it poses to people's intellectual property and copyright, we've taken a decidely anti-Generative AI stance. While AI can be helpful for accomplishing simple tasks, we feel that in order for clients to get the most out of their experience and not run into any issues with copyright down the road, we have never used Generative AI in any projects that we've been a part of.
